Cleveland Clinic Honors Nursing Student

Notre Dame College nursing student Salvatore Caroniti has been honored by the Cleveland Clinic with the institution’s annual Caregiver Honors Award.

Caroniti is a junior from Broadview Heights, Ohio, and a three-year member of the Notre Dame Cross Country program. He has been an employee of the Cleveland Clinic only since June but is already making his mark as a patient care nurse assistant.

Caroniti was one of two employees to earn the award, which is bestowed annually for employees whose performances embody the Cleveland Clinic’s “Patients First” principle in the manner in which they deliver outstanding care and service. He received the award on Aug. 15.

To be eligible for the award, employees must support the core values of the Cleveland Clinic: quality, innovation, teamwork, service, integrity and compassion.

“Our expectations are high for the dedicated individuals who join our team to deliver a superior patient experience,” said Cleveland Clinic CEO and President Delos M. Cosgrove, M.D. “Delivering a superior patient experience is exactly what Salvatore Caroniti demonstrated, and for this reason Cleveland Clinic is honored to award the 2012 Cleveland Clinic Caregivers Honors Award to him.”

While Caroniti's accomplishment was certainly noteworthy, it was no surprise to the faculty and staff at Notre Dame College.

“It comes as no surprise that Salvatore has been recognized in this prestigious way by the Cleveland Clinic," said Beth Kaskel, DNP, chair of NDC’s Division of Nursing. "A focused student, born leader and a good person with a passion for helping others, Sal personifies what makes our College and our nursing program special.”

Notre Dame Head Cross Country Coach Earl Peterson agreed.

“Sal is a talented and driven individual,” Peterson said. “He is one of the most focused and committed athletes I've ever coached. It's no surprise to me that the Cleveland Clinic would honor him for his dedication and compassion.”

NDC Director of Athletics Scott Swain added, “This award speaks highly of the NDC nursing program and is a true representation of the [NCAA] Division II motto of ‘Life in the Balance.’”

The Cleveland Clinic is a nonprofit multispecialty academic medical center located in Cleveland that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. The Cleveland Clinic is currently regarded as one of the top four hospitals in the United States as rated by U.S. News & World Report.
