Notre Dame College to Travel to Bruges, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Berlin in 2015

The Notre Dame College international, educational travel trip in 2015 will include the historical and cultural highlights of Germany─the homeland of the College’s founders, the Sisters of Notre Dame─as well as Belgium and the Netherlands.

The experiential learning opportunity and application of global responsibility will take place February 26-March 7, 2015, when the College contingent is expected to spend two days in Brussels, three in Amsterdam, one in Hamburg and two in Berlin.

Each spring break students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the College embark on an international learning experience, typically to an overseas destination. Students may earn academic credit for the travel, which serves as a supplement to classroom learning and builds a sense of community.

In Germany in 2015, the group will view a portion of the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie, the famous crossing between East and West Berlin, along with the Holocaust Memorial and the Reichstag building, once home to the Parliament of the old German Empire. The travelers also will visit the historic Rathaus town hall, Jungfernstieg promenade and St. Michael’s Church of Hamburg, as well as the engineering feat of the canal-filled warehouse district of museums, shops and restaurants.

The 2015 itinerary for Belgium includes a walking tour of the Renaissance architecture and cosmopolitan cityscapes in the capital of Brussels, known as Bruges, and a visit to the site of the famous battle of Waterloo where Napoleon was defeated.

Time in Amsterdam will include excursions to the Rijksmuseum to view works by Rembrandt and other Dutch artists and to the Anne Frank museum. A boat ride through the canals, an Indonesian-influenced Rijsttafel dinner and a tour of the Dutch countryside also are planned for the Notre Dame community members.

The 10-day travel package for 2015 includes airfare from Cleveland to Brussels and return from Berlin; all transfers to hotels; a private bus, driver and tour manager for the entire trip; breakfast and dinner each day; admissions to all sights and activities listed on the itinerary and three- and four-star hotel stays; and high-speed train fare from Hamburg to Berlin.

Details on the itinerary and cost are available online. For additional information about this trip or to register, email Roz Scheer-McLeod, associate professor of health science.
