Notre Dame College Students Train with IRS, Offer Free Tax Preparation Service

Notre Dame College is one of the few four-year colleges in Northern Ohio to connect students with IRS certification and provide them the experience of preparing income tax returns for actual residents.

Accounting majors at the College operate a free service center on campus throughout the tax season, voluntarily filing federal and state income tax forms for low-income individuals and families. The students have the opportunity to earn internship credits for their work.

Notre Dame is one of just a few Ohio four-year colleges north of Columbus in the 22 county service area to offer the assistance on site.

This is the ninth consecutive year Notre Dame students have supplied free tax preparation for Cuyahoga County residents who cannot afford account services or software packages.

Students, all of whom have been trained and certified by the IRS, staff the tax preparation center in the College’s Regina Hall Room 202 from January 24 to April 11, except for the week of March 6. The service is available to those who qualify from 2-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

Forms are completed while the taxpayers wait, so the students deliver professional services equivalent to those of employed tax preparers. This year the service site is led by seniors Tawny M. Flaveau and Lianna Cabral.

This tax season the College also is conducting a "Super Saturday" tax clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. February 18, when students will be joined by employees from Ohio Savings Bank for increased capacity to meet with residents and prepare returns. This event is in rooms 205 and 218 of the College's Administration Building.

Clients must make an appointment to have their taxes prepared. To do so, they must call United Way’s 2-1-1 First Call for Help. 2-1-1 is a nationwide phone number to dial for assistance with health and human services. Capacity limits at the site are dictated by the number of students offering their services.

To be eligible for the free service, taxpayers must have a qualifying income that ranges based on household size. In 2017 a one-person household must have earned less than $29,700 to be eligible. The amount rises $10,350 with each additional person in the household.

All returns are screened for eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit.

Participants must bring a current photo identification; Social Security cards for each adult and child listed on the return; all tax documents, including sources of income like W-2 and 1099 forms, for the filing year; support for any deductions and credits sought; health care verification; the prior year’s tax returns; and bank account and routing numbers to arrange direct deposit of any refund. Those filing jointly must both be present if e-filing.

Notre Dame is located at 4545 College Road in South Euclid. The campus entrance is 1867 South Green Road.
