Notre Dame College Partners with Renee Jones Empowerment Center for Human Trafficking Symposium

The sponsor of Ohio’s legislation to increase penalties for those dealing in sex slavery and forced labor will be the keynote speaker for the daylong Notre Dame College and Renee Jones Empowerment Center (RJEC) 2013 NEO Annual Human Trafficking Symposium Friday, Aug. 9, at the College.
Ohio Human Trafficking Commission member and State Rep. Teresa Fedor, from the Toledo, Ohio, area 47th District, will address the conference at 11:15 a.m. Aug. 9 in the Performing Arts Center at the College. Fedor helped pass House Bill 262, known as the Safe Harbor Law, which not only makes human trafficking a felony with a mandatory prison sentence but also improves care for victims of sex slavery and forced labor.
The complete symposium, featuring an interview with a human trafficking survivor and an original drama portrayal by the RJEC performing arts group, is from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check-in begins at 8 a.m.
Session topics range from meeting the legal needs of human trafficking victims and prosecuting Internet child predators and child pornographers to learning about human trafficking in the hotel and motel industry and educating the public at large.
In addition to Fedor, presenters include Renee Jones, executive director of the RJEC, Sr. Cecilia Liberatore, SND, and prominent area attorneys and law enforcement officials.
The conference is open to the general public─and of particular interest to health care professionals, educators, law enforcement, church and faith community leaders, social service providers and victim advocates.
Six continuing education units are available for social workers. Discounted registration is offered for students.

The cost of the symposium is $60 or $25 for students with a valid student ID on the day of conference. The registration fee includes materials, refreshments and lunch.
