In memory of Clurie Bennis

Always the Giver of Joy and Love – but Truly, Herself, The GIFT!  Clurie Bennis’s door was always open to artists who needed a place to stay, to create, to study, and to enhance the globe with Beauty and Hope! The kindest of souls that offered summer art classes, private cello lessons with members of the Cleveland Orchestra, girl talk, or just simply allowing us to dance freely while you played your piano…laughing and eyes smiling.

After attending Radcliffe College, Clurie won the Sculptural Drawing Award at the Museum School in Boston and went on to teach art at the Park School of Brookline, MA.
She met her husband Warren Bennis in Boston while he was teaching at MIT and together they lived in Boston, Calcutta, Buffalo, Cincinnati, and Aspen. She and Warren shared the ability to bring people together in a way that nurtured human connection so that all who entered their world left with an enormous sense of possibility. Their house was always full of ideas, art, chaos, playfulness, and generative conversation that radiated out into the world.

Clurie returned to Cleveland after her own mother’s death in 1994 and was immediately pulled into the warm embrace of the vibrant community. No matter where she was, Clurie planted seeds of love in hidden gestures, offering a ride, a meal, a home, in order to support others in bringing beauty to the world. More than anything, Clurie wanted to be helpful to others. Clurie Williams Bennis died unexpectedly on January 7, 2018.

Clurie Bennis is irreplaceable; but tonight we will remember her soulful life and her special love of music in the extraordinary songs and music you hear tonight.  Ron Hubbard and his singers will leave us with many more “Clurie” seeds to grow and flower more abundantly, energetically and more sweetly than ever. Thank you Clurie! And thank you Reverend Hubbard!
