Notre Dame College and the Renee Jones Empowerment Center (RJEC) will host the 2012 NEO Human Trafficking Symposium that addresses human trafficking, the worldwide crime against humanity and a growing form of 21st century human slavery, in its many forms and manifestations. The symposium will provide a wealth of important information to the general public, with particular interest to healthcare professionals, educators, law enforcement, church and faith community leaders, community members, students, parents, social service providers and victim advocates.

Highlights of the daylong program include:

  • The Game:an original drama performed by the RJECPerforming Arts Group
     
  • Human Trafficking 101: Getting the word out in your community, an address by Sr. Cecilia Liberatore, SND ’67
     
  • 2Smart4U: Moderator and speaker-educator Christine Jacobs will speak about communication with youth regarding human trafficking, recognizing danger signs and providing a trusting environment. Possible areas of discussion include social media, the influence of peer pressure, and social expectations before and after a person is victimized.
     
  • Human Trafficking Survivors Speak Out: A panel including victims and victims’ advocates will serve as moderator of “What I Wish I'd Known and What I Wish Others Had Known.”
     
  • Hard Shifts, Soft Hearts: What healthcare professionals need to know to identify and assist victims of human trafficking. The speaker is Laurel Yee RN, MSN, manager, care management, Cleveland Clinic.
     
  • Keynote Address (11:45 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.): Freeing Bodies, Minds and Hearts: Challenges and accomplishments in helping trafficking survivors, presented byRenee Jones, president and CEO, Renee Jones Empowerment Center
     
  • The Traumatized Child: The special needs and considerations of child victims of sex trafficking. The speaker is Dr. Peter Corpus, director of inpatient services, Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
     
  • Pimp Culture – Pimp Language: Identifying the methods, language and tactics of sex traffickers and law enforcement’s role in bringing them down. Presented by the NEO Crimes Against Children Task Force.
     
  • Panel Discussion – Resolve to be a Resolver, not a Bystander: Updates from agencies and organizations working on human trafficking in Northeast Ohio. Invited panelists include representatives of Bellfaire, Collaborative Initiative to End Human Trafficking, Task Force, Homeland Security ICE, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, and others.

Seating is limited. Early registration is encouraged to guarantee you will not be turned away at the door. Conference registration includes materials, refreshments and lunch. The cost of the symposium is$55 ($25 for students - no accreditation, student ID must be presented and valid on day of conference).

One hour of Continuing Education Credit is available for social workers and counselors. CEU for nurses and teachers is pending.
