NDC Baseball Celebrates 30th Anniversary of Barker's Perfect Game

With the turn of the calendar, Notre Dame Baseball is now just six weeks away, and the team and its fans are turning their attention to the program's annual fundraiser banquet.

This year's banquet is slated for Friday, Jan. 28, and the event will be a tribute to the 30th anniversary of Len Barker's perfect game. Barker -- a current NDC assistant baseball coach and former Cleveland Indians pitcher -- threw the 10th perfect game in Major League Baseball history on May 15, 1981.

Barker is scheduled to be joined at the banquet by a number of former Indians players, including Joe Charboneau and Mike Hargrove, as well as Indians Vice President of Public Relations Bob DiBiasio. The evening will include a viewing of the original game broadcast, a Q&A session with Barker and former Tribe players, and an auction and raffle.

“We want this to be a special night for Lenny,” said NDC Head Baseball Coach Nick Weisheipl, whose Falcons are slated to open their 2011 season on Feb. 12. “He's been a fantastic addition to our program, and we want to kick off his special anniversary year in a big way.”

Barker, who pitched for the Indians from 1979 to 1983, was hired as a Notre Dame assistant last February.

The 2011 Falcons Baseball Banquet will be held at the Normandy Party Center in Wickliffe, Ohio. Doors open at 7 p.m. and ticket and general information is available on the baseball page at www.NotreDameFalcons.com.
