Expert Discusses Strategies for Managing Learning Disabilities

Notre Dame College’s Academic Support Center will host a presentation by Dr. Jay Berk, a licensed psychologist and expert in working with children, adolescents and families, for its 2011 North Eastern Ohio Education Association Day on Friday, Oct. 14.

Dr. Berk will discuss practical strategies for managing ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome in the school setting. His lively, two-hour presentation will offer strategies to manage distractibility, non-completion of work, social issues, rigid thinking, lying, impulsive behaviors and anger issues.

Dr. Berk received a master’s degree in clinical counseling psychology from Cleveland State University and a doctorate in clinical psychology from Union Institute. He has provided training and workshops throughout the country at many universities and schools, and has served as a consultant to Mentor and Hudson schools. He also provides training for the Hawaii Department of Education and was a past consultant to the Screen Actors Guild and UNICEF.

Dr. Berk’s specialties include treating clients with stress and anxiety issues, learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome, Tourette’s Syndrome, and severe emotional and behavioral disturbances. He is recognized for providing practical training where participants time and time again rank the presentation as one of the best they have attended for immediately applicable information that helps in the classroom setting.

Dr. Berk will give his talk in Notre Dame College’s Performing Arts Center from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost for the event is $25. Two continuing education unit (CEU) credits are available.
