“The faculty and staff care about a student as a whole person. I think this was best brought home to me when we had a presentation by Dr. Michael Manos of the Cleveland Clinic on ‘ADHD Throughout the Life Span.’ We had a terrific turnout. We followed this with a brown bag lunch at [the faculty’s] request so we could implement ideas that Dr. Manos suggested and cover ADHD accommodation in the classroom. This attests to the fact how interested the faculty is in their students as individuals and how supportive they are of the program.”

Core Component: Notre Dame College’s learning resources support student learning and effective teaching.

Notre Dame College ensures access to the resources necessary to support learning and teaching.

• The Clara Fritzsche Library offers artistic events that are publicized through the College’s website and intranet. Library hours and other information regarding Library use are also available on these two sites. All students have access to OhioLINK, a consortium of academic libraries that provides access to thousands of books and full-text articles.

• The Dwyer Learning Center provides free academic support to all students. Students learn note-taking and study skills and can receive individual tutoring. Study groups and athletic study tables are established by pairing students with tutors in the same class. Level I support is provided to students with documented disabilities. Test proctoring rooms provide a quiet, distraction-free environment.

• Computer labs provide access to the Internet and intranet. Instructors use Web CT to post assignments and tutorials.

Academic Support for Students with Learning Differences is a fee-based service. The Academic Support Center provides students with workshops on time management, study skills, and organization. Instructional advisors work on an individual basis with the students in math and liberal arts. Additionally, students are trained in the use of the Kurzweil and adaptive equipment. After training, the students have unlimited use of the adaptive equipment. Goal setting support groups are provided to the students in conjunction with the Cleveland Clinic.

Notre Dame College evaluates the use of its learning resources to enhance student learning and effective teaching.

• Evaluation forms for Student Development are located on the intranet. Students can respond to the survey and the surveys go to the department managers electronically.

• A class evaluation form is completed by each student at the end of the semester. Forms can be anonymous and faculty have access to the results from the Academic Affairs Office.

• Programs sponsored by various departments such as Professional Development and the Library include a participant feedback form.

Notre Dame College’s systems and structures enable partnerships and innovations that enhance student learning and strengthen teaching effectiveness.

• The Education Department enjoys relationships with area schools for field experience placement.

• The Associate of Science in Health Sciences is in partnership with the Huron School of Nursing for nursing courses and field placements for nursing students.

• The STARS program is a partnership with Cleveland Public Schools. Students stay on campus and experience college life. Classes are taught by faculty members in English, Math, and Social Sciences.

• The Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) program gives students the tools to learn about the free enterprise system in a real working situation. This program is present on more than 800 college campuses nationwide. SIFE asks students to apply their knowledge to better their communities.
